Shondaland spoke with Chen about the meaning of education, communication in emergencies, seasonality, and the evolution of the jigglypuff. The book explores grief love frustration and of course, emergencies of all kinds. Your Emergency Contact is Chen at his best - a more mature and intentional writer who stays true to his own imagination and observations of the world. ![]() His poems traverse the landscape from the mundane beauty of the everyday to exploring the complex terrain of queerness, immigration, capitalism, familial pain, and the joy of finding your own chosen family. He juggles teaching and editing a variety of projects, including co-editing the digital literary magazine Underblong. Chen also has an MFA and a Ph.D., as well as two Pushcart Prizes. As a lifelong student, both inside and outside the classroom, it’s fitting that in his sophomore collection, Your Emergency Contact Has Experienced an Emergency, education is a theme he explores deeply.
